Loss Boxes
Care Packages for Grieving Mothers
"The idea for our loss boxes came from a friend who sent me a care package
after my miscarriage. She had experienced a previous stillbirth, and the items that she chose to include were a balm to my soul in the midst of my profound grief. In the years that followed, I began to make care packages for other women experiencing miscarriage, and Heard and Held grew from there.
There is a tendency after pregnancy loss to be frustrated with one’s body. We are born with the ability to bear children. Why is it that some people who don’t even want children are able to have healthy babies, but ours died before we could even hold them? We begin to wonder if our bodies are somehow defective. There is a temptation to be angry with ourselves and to push ourselves to do better. Some women throw themselves into healthy eating and exercise. Others turn to food for comfort and begin to overeat. We may feel shame related to our loss, and we
may feel that our bodies do not deserve to be treated with care. That’s where these boxes come in."
